NOEL’S POND — Bob Byrnes of the Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce said it was disheartening to see a major thoroughfare into Stephenville closed again on Thursday afternoon due to flooding.

He was referring to the closure of a section of Route 460 between the community of Noel’s Pond and Gull Pond.

Const. Adam Gardner of RCMP Traffic Services West, reported early Thursday afternoon the Department of Transportation had shut down Route 460 from Gull Pond to Noel's Pond until further notice.

Byrnes said it was seven years ago that Joan Shea, MHA for St. George’s-Stephenville East, made a commitment to upgrade the road.

“The people of Stephenville have been more than patient waiting for the road to be done,” he said.

Byrnes said he has contacted Shea and asked her to come and speak at a Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce meeting regrading where the realignment of that section of highway stands.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation and Works had personnel monitoring the bridge in Barachois Brook where ice jammed up against an old bridge had backed up well past a trestle in that location.

A resident of the community of Barachois Brook said, a short while before dark, it appeared some water had broke loose on the south side of the brook and that it was flowing steadily.

Is there any surprise that a committment made by Joan Shea would fall through?
