DEGRAU — A 17-year-old female resident of Degrau died as the result of injuries from a fire in Cape St. George early Sunday morning.

The Bay St. George RCMP received a report of the fatal house fire in the community of Degrau from the Cape St. George Fire chief 5:48 a.m.

Members of Bay St. George District RCMP and Forensic Identification Services were still on the scene conducting an investigation on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighter Wayne Deaves said he and other members of the volunteer department arrived on the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the call. He said fire under brought under control very quickly, but unfortunately they couldn’t save the young woman who was inside.

Deaves said the fire was contained to the kitchen area with the remainder of the house receiving smoke damage.

Deaves said there is no visible damage to the exterior. Deaves said he couldn’t speculate on the cause of the fire.

The RCMP said they are continuing their investigation and that an autopsy is planned for today.
