CORNER BROOK  Two men with hefty amounts of outstanding fines spent the night locked up in the Corner Brook jail after they were pulled over by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in separate traffic stops Monday.

Topics :
Chevrolet , Oldsmobile , Trans-Canada Highway , Corner Brook , Botwood

Melvin Grant Keeping of Corner Brook owes more than $17,000 in fines, while Hugh Terrence Sheppard of Botwood is more than $11,000 in arrears.

Keeping, 30, was stopped by the RNC while driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck on O’Connell Drive in Corner Brook at around 4 p.m. Monday. Sheppard, 49, was stopped while driving a 1999 Oldsmobile on the Trans-Canada Highway at around 9:15 p.m.

Both men were charged with driving while suspended from doing so, operating a vehicle without an insurance policy in effect, and failing to transfer ownership of a vehicle.

Sheppard was also charged with operating an unregistered vehicle.

Both men had their vehicles seized by the RNC and were held in custody until they could make appearances in provincial court Tuesday morning. They were both released on conditions that included they refrain from driving.

Keeping and Sheppard both had their next provincial court appearances scheduled for May 7.

released on conditions including that they refrain from driving....wasn't that the point of having their licenses suspended??? Obviously this approach does not work...

Another danger on the already dangerous highway. Responsible drivers should not have to put up with scum like that on our roads. One should never be able to accumulate 17,000 in fines!
