DEER LAKE  Deer Lake’s town council has put off a decision to pay for a garbage box that was damaged by a plow during recent routine snow clearing.

A town resident has asked for compensation of an undisclosed amount to replace her garbage box, which she claims was destroyed by town workers. A recommendation was made by public works committee member Sheila Mercer to provide $50 for a new bin instead of replacing the whole box, as a good will gesture. But that gesture was met with some resistance by other council members.

“If we do that, we have to do it for everyone,” said deputy mayor Sandra Pinksen. “We have to be careful with this.”

Superintendent Dave Thomas said the box in question was buried in snow in a ditch, and invisible to the plow operator.

“They don’t intentionally destroy things like this,” he said.

Council deferred the decision until the next council meeting.

If the garbage box was in the ditch, this would be within the Town's right of way. Hence the town would not be responsible for damage. Cities and towns should not encourage or support permanent garbage boxes by the side of roads. Go teh way of Mount Pearl and use automated waste dispoal vehicles and waste bins.

All garbage boxes should be destroyed, they are an eyesore!

If someone damaged the town's property I think the town would expect the person responsible to fix it. The town damaged someone's personal property, they should be responsible for fixing what they damaged.
