The province will allot $227 million over next three years to build a hospital in Corner Brook. Construction will begin in 2015.

The provincial government announced the plans this morning at a news conference attended by Premier Kathy Dunderdale, Health Minister Susan Sullivan and area MHAs.

Next week's provincial budget will include money for further design and planning. The total cost of the project will run between $500 million-$600 million.

The hospital was announced in 2007. In 2010 the province committed to starting construction by summer of 2012. But despite spending $20 million on the project in the last couple of years, construction has not been ready to start.

The site between Cpl. Pinksen Memorial Drive and the Lewin Parkway has been cleared and shaped, and water and sewer extended to it. However, the design for the facility has yet to be decided and the province has been reviewing a master program report on the hospital.

Great news! This is probably the biggest infrastructure investment ever in this province. Kudos to the government.

Well, if you want to throw around the hyperbolic "probablies" : this is probably the most transparent, duplicitous, contemptuous piece of (re-run!) bush league vote-buying in the history of Newfoundland...and that's saying something.

My god I have never seen such ungrateful people! If I was the Premier I would have just scrapped the whole thing! Really give the people something to complain about.

Maybe I'm stupid, but the announcement of 227 million towards a 600 million dollar hospital don't warrant the 9 negative comments above. Thank you premier.

Balony, a down sized. Hospital. A far cry from the one promised from the artist conception as shown to us by Tom Marshall. A few years ago. Let them eat cake!! and we have to wait until the 2015 election year to have it started. I guess the platform for Granter will be. You have to vote for me and the PC party to get it. I do not like this type of politics at the expense of our health care. Delay Delay and Delay Time to go Kathy Dunderdale, I could never vote for. Such a deceitfull premier and PC party.

What this hospital was first announced it was only susposed to cost $150 million in 2007. To mke the worst of it CornerBrook does not even need a new hospital. Seeing the the current facility is only 34 years old.

We can wait 3 years for the start of the hospital, but can not wait 6 months for a PUB on the MF. We should give the 660 million ( nalcor) to the hospital, give Nalcor the 270 million over 3 years.

So that fire has been stamped out, the file cleared off the desk.......let's get outta here! So, is this your thrift-store price, folks? An empty re-promise of an insufficient amount of money to "advance construction" (no finished, working hospital in that description, is there!?) starting in 2015...maybe. But if anything happens in the interim (like you have the temerity to not re-elect us), all bets are off. Again. Will that win them their seats? I'll bet they just found themselves another bargain. Baaaaaaaaaaa.....

David, You are bang on with that comment. The Premier rode into town on a manure spreader dumped a load then hightailed it back across the overpass where the air smells better for her and the cronies!

Just another slap to the people of Corner brook and the West Coast. Seems they will use it once again to try and buy our votes.... Are we that stupid to fall for that again?

Perfect timing, start it in two years and use it as a carrot for votes in the next provincial election. Love seeing the politics well and alive.

Optimistically the hospital should be open by 2020.
