The RCMP in Deer Lake have charged a 60-year-old man from Pasadena for administering a poisonous substance to a domestic animal after allegedly attempting to poison his dog over the weekend.

The man is alleged to have placed the dog in the backseat of a vehicle and drawing the exhaust fumes from the muffler of the running vehicle to the interior of the car through a garden hose, in an apparent attempt to asphyxiate the family pet.

The dog was later euthanized at a veterinary clinic in Corner Brook after being seized by the RCMP. The man has been released to appear in Corner Brook Provincial Court on Aug. 6.

He has numerous release conditions, including not to possess or own an animal of any kind.
