The RCMP has confirmed that Chesley Sweetapple, a 74-year-old man reportedly missing since Saturday after going berry picking in central Newfoundland, has been found.

Cpl. Michael Fewer of the RCMP's Grand Falls-Windsor detachment said air crew aboard a Fire and Emergency Services - NL helicopter spotted a person wearing an orange hood in a bog mid-morning Friday.

Fewer said Sweetapple appeared to be confused and had trouble communicating as he was airlifted to a heath-care facility in Pasadena. However, he said Sweetapple did understand that he was safe.

Sweetapple was first reported missing last weekend. The search for the 74-year-old resumed Friday after having been suspended on Monday.

After receiving treatment from paramedics in Pasadena, Sweetapple was transported to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook for further medical treatment.

Fewer said those involved in the search were overjoyed to learn Sweetapple had been found alive.

I met Ches and his wonderful wife while walking the Outer Battery on my first and only visit to Newfoundland. He and his wife welcomed me as family, fed me wonderful meals and showed me around the beautiful peninsula. I'll never forget their generosity. It left an impression on me on how Newfoundlanders are- salt of the earth people. The best. Ches and Florence are truly the nicest people in the world. We've kept in touch since that 2007 trip and I've been yearning to get back up there to see them. I pray for God's strength to Ches and his family and hope he is safe and returns to his loving family. With all our love, The Whitmore family, Hampden, Maine.
