Marine Atlantic is reporting that the MV Highlanders will be back in service later this evening and arrive in Port aux Basques early Tuesday morning.
This news comes after the vessel lost its power Monday morning. It reportedly went to anchor in Sydney Harbour before it managed to reach the dock in North Sydney.
In a news release issued early Monday evening, Marine Atlantic reported that it was an isolated electrical power issue at fault for the service interruption. All systems have since been tested and confirmed to be operational, according to the release.
Marine Atlantic said, “(t)here is expected to be minimal impact on Marine Atlantic’s operating schedule.”
NORTH SYDNEY — The MV Highlanders sat anchored off Sydney Harbour this morning as its crew dealt with an unexpected power loss that stalled the Marine Atlantic vessel as it was making its way into North Sydney just before noon.
"I'd say anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour they were in Sydney Harbour," said company spokesperson Darrell Mercer.
"To bring the vessel back on line it takes a bit of time, but all the engines came back on line when they tried it."
Mercer said the engines were brought back to life after the ship's systems were "rebooted" and the MV Highlanders is now in port at North Sydney.
"It docked a short while ago. Technicians are currently on board and we'll have a clearer picture later today as to what the cause was and whether or not there will be any (schedule) impacts."
The latest incident involving a Marine Atlantic ferry follows the MV Blue Puttees being sent to dry dock in Halifax after it struck a wharf and ran around while departing Port-aux-Basques two weeks ago.
The MV Highlanders experienced a mechanical issue this morning that resulted in a loss of power in Sydney Harbour, according to Marine Atlantic.
The power and engines were restored and the vessel was on its way to dock in North Sydney. According to a Marine Atlantic statement, inspections will take place to determine the cause of the power failure.
Marine Atlantic said it will know later if sailing schedules will be affected.
