STEPHENVILLE A 40-year-old Stephenville man was released on conditions when he appeared in Stephenville Provincial Court this afternoon on a number of charges following an incident in the town Wednesday night.
The Bay St. George Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a complaint of uttering threats involving a firearm in the town at 8:20 p.m. There were no injuries reported.
Ian Churchill was later arrested for allegedly uttering those threats. A search warrant was executed at his residence and five handguns, five rifles, two shotguns and a large amount of various types of ammunition was seized.
In addition to the uttering threats to kill a person, Churchill has been charged with three counts of possessing a firearm without a registration certificate, six counts of unsafe storage of firearms, one count of unsafe storage of ammunition and one count of possession of a firearm for the purpose of committing an offence. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Churchill's next court appearance has been set for Sept. 23 in Stephenville.
