STEPHENVILLE — The Stephenville Green Team is concluding its work restoring and enhancing the Blanche Brook Park area in Stephenville throughout the summer.
The work is part of the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador Green Team program that is well into its 21st season, with projects throughout the province. Conservation Corps NL is a non-profit organization which employs youth throughout the province to provide experience, as well as valuable team work and leadership skills.
Blanche Brook sustained significant damage in 2005 during one of the worst floods in recent memory for the Stephenville area. Approximately 160 homes were directly affected.
The Green Team has been assisting with the creation of a park in the flood plain area. Members have been busy planting flowers and shrubs and creating a walking trail. The park is expected to be an important area for community recreation.
“The community park will be an excellent area to promote wellness through property beautification, leisure and environmental stewardship,” said Derek Lomond, vice-president of the Stephenville Flood Committee, in a prepared release.
The Green Team Program has operated in the province since 1993. It has employed more than 2,200 youth toward the completion of more than 450 projects in communities across the province.
