RIVER OF PONDS A 77-year-old Northern Peninsula woman was killed when the vehicle she was driving hit a moose Thursday afternoon.
The collision occurred about one kilometre south of River of Ponds on Route 430. She was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Gerard Webb of the RCMP said traffic services personnel are investigating and hope to have more answers next week. They will not release the name of the woman until her family is fully notified, he said.
Webb said it’s not the first moose accident the Port Saunders RCMP have seen this year but it’s the first fatality. He added that there does seem to be more of the animals around in the area and advises drivers to use extra caution.
