The Bay St. George RCMP said the investigation into stolen property located in Stephenville Manor is continuing and charges are pending.
STEPHENVILLE — The Bay St. George RCMP continue its investigation Wednesday into a case of stolen property at the Stephenville Manor, which was discovered during a fire alarm at the building early Tuesday morning.
Two male residents of Stephenville, one 19 years old and the other 21, were arrested and later released but police are in the process of deciding if one or both of them will be charged with possession of stolen property.
Police said the fire alarm at the Stephenville Manor apartment building was activated around 3 a.m. and the building was evacuated.
An investigation revealed the fire alarm was activated as a result of smoke from pizza burning in an oven. It was in that apartment of origin that police discovered a set of patio furniture and two lawnmowers, still in their boxes, which were determined to be the property of Canadian Tire Store in Stephenville.
Police were still trying on Wednesday afternoon to determine whether a car stereo, still in its box and located in the apartment, was a stolen item or a gift as the apartment tenant had claimed. Police said that item was determined not to be the property of Canadian Tire.
