PORT AUX BASQUES — Port aux Basques will have a new mayor in September.
Longtime mayor Brian Button has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election.
After serving as a municipal leader for 18 years, the former vice-president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is ready to dedicate more time to his family, according to a prepared statement issued Monday.
Button hopes people in the gateway community put their names forward for election day.
“Being part of the whole decision-making process for our community has been a very rewarding experience,” stated the outspoken mayor.
Button has been vocal on behalf of the community on a number of province-wide issues, primarily dealings with the Marine Atlantic ferry system station in Port aux Basques.
