SPRINGDALE The RCMP has confirmed that one person died in a motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway Friday morning.
The accident involved a sport utility vehicle and a transport truck and happened about 12 kilometres west of the Baie Verte Junction where Route 410 intersects with the highway.
The driver and only occupant of the sport utility vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the transport truck, who was the lone occupant of the rig, was transported to hospital in Springdale for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police from the Springdale detachment of the RCMP, as well as fire department and ambulance personnel from Springdale, all responded to the scene at around 10:48 a.m. Friday. The accident resulted in a temporary closure of the highway and lengthy delays in traffic flow throughout the afternoon until both lanes of the highway were reopened.
RCMP Traffic Services are continuing their investigation and have not released the identity of the deceased at this time.
