STEPHENVILLE — BDW Roofing Inc. of Stephenville has been awarded the tender for roof renovations at the West Coast Training Centre in Stephenville.
Town council approved the tender at its regular general meeting last Thursday.
The company’s bid of $57,675 plus harmonized sales tax will result in the flat and sloped portions of roof upgraded.
Mayor Tom O’Brien said the main domed style roof on the gymnasium portion of the building is still in good shape.
The funding is being provided by the provincial government through an agreement that allows the town to take ownership of the building.
That agreement provides $515,000 for renovations and upgrades at the fitness and sporting facility.
The first priority is to weather proof the building, then exterior painting and interior renovations will be completed.
The town is currently working with the YMCA on a memorandum of understanding and operational agreement for the facility. Part of that process involved representatives of the national office of the YMCA visiting the building, which took place recently.
O’Brien said he believes the national representatives liked what they saw and the YMCA is currently formulating a plan on how to best utilize the facility.
The provincial government announced in late March it was no longer going to operate the West Coast Training Centre and announced it was being closed down within 48 hours. However, government quickly agreed to a three-month extension and finally closed the training facility in late June.
It was in mid-July the agreement was reached with the Town of Stephenville to take ownership of the building.
BDW Roofing is also currently doing a roof refit on the Regional Aquatic Centre in Stephenville.
