DEER LAKE — The executive director of Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries said a reduction in hours of operation for local libraries is necessary to keep the facilities operating.
Provincial budget cuts forced libraries to reduce relief workers, meaning some libraries have had to either close or operate under reduced hours because there were no substitutes for full-time staff.
Shawn Tetford said the reduction doesn’t impact the larger libraries as much, but the smaller facilities with only one or two staff members have seen hours cut over the summer and may see it again with the Christmas season coming up.
“We’ve had to look at what the peak hours are for each library and go from there because a lot of sites cannot stay open for the full day (during certain times),” said Tetford. “Normally we’d provide 100 per cent coverage when someone is on leave, but now it’s down to 50 per cent.”
The Deer Lake Library’s hours are posted on its doors.
