Cape St. George Mayor Peter Fenwick was a former leader of the provincial NDP party.
STEPHENVILLE — Peter Fenwick feels sorry for NDP Leader Lorraine Michael after her party members sent her a letter on Sunday asking for a leadership convention in 2014.
As a former NDP leader, Fenwick said he was always impressed with Michael and what she’s done.
He said what happened here is like “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”
“I’m amazed (the four NDP MHAs) lack the common sense to run a party. You don’t do that,” he said, making reference to the letter the MHAs sent to Michael.
Fenwick said the whole situation could have been handled better and feels it’s “insane” to do what the MHAs did.
He said that same type of situation couldn’t have happened back when he was NDP leader because the party’s constitution back then called for a leadership review at every convention. Fenwick said the party made a mistake in making that change to its constitution.
