STEPHENVILLE — The Stephenville Leisure and Recreation Council is closer to its goal of creating a communications system now that they have an electronic bulletin board up and in working order.
Coun. Darlene Oake, one of three town representatives on the leisure and recreation council, said the board is set up in front of the W.E. Cormack Building on Carolina Avenue.
When the leisure and recreation council was revived four years ago, Oake said members identified a number of goals through a series of strategic planning sessions. One of them was the creation of a communication system to inform the public about opportunities for healthy living, sport, recreation and wellness.
The electronic bulletin board is one of several ways in the plans to make people aware of what’s happening in regards to leisure and recreation.
Oake said the leisure and recreation council pitched the project and got the support of the Stephenville town council, then arranged a partnership agreement with the Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce. Through this pact, the chamber has agreed to have their employee receive and input the information that will be displayed on the board.
The leisure and recreation council is composed of town council representatives and community volunteers. For the past four years, Oake and Coun. Laura Aylward have been the town council representatives on leisure and recreation council and from the newly elected town council, the representatives are Oake again, along with Coun. John Finn and Coun. Justin House.
Community volunteers on the leisure and recreation council include chair Sean Hillier, Deborah Coughlin, Lisa Henley, Randy Alexander, Rosie Forsey, Maurice Hynes and student representative Kayla Olson.
The cost of the new electronic bulletin board is around $6,000.
