LOURDES  Police is investigating an early morning fire that occurred in Lourdes resulting in a residence being completely destroyed.

The house is located about a kilometer on the road leading to Winterhouses from the intersection near Lourdes town hall.

Cpl. John Butler said police and the Lourdes Fire Department were dispatched to the home at 4:15 a.m. and when the fire department arrived the residence was already fully engulfed in flames with high winds also playing a factor in the dwelling burning to the ground.

Firefighters could not move in on arrival due to downed live power lines and had to wait for Newfoundland Power to arrive on the scene to cut the power before attempting to fight the blaze.

Butler said the owner of the house is out of the province and the house was not occupied at the time of the blaze. Fire investigators are expected on the scene this afternoon.
