A man suspected of hitting and killing his girlfriend while driving drunk at Airport Heights in St. John’s still doesn't have a lawyer.

William Conway is escorted out of Courtroom No. 7 in provincial court in St. John’s and back to the holding cells in this Telegram file photo.

William Conway, 50, appeared in provincial court today via video link when his case was called.

Duty counsel Jason Edwards told Judge Greg Brown that Conway's legal aid application for a lawyer is "still pending assignment."

Edwards went on to say that, "Given the nature of his charge," Conway would likely be assigned a senior legal aid lawyer.

Edwards and Crown prosecutor Jeff Summers agreed to have the case set over until Dec. 20, at which time the court would be updated on the status of Conway's lawyer application.

Conway is accused of killing 57-year-old Veronica Lewis on Firdale Drive in Airport Heights on Oct. 24.

The victim, who is referred to as Veronica Lewis in court documents, is known to her family as Veronica Doyle.

Lewis — who was reportedly Conway’s girlfriend — was found on the road in Airport Heights that morning at around 1:20 a.m.

Conway is charged with criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while having a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit causing death, failure to remain at the scene of an accident (hit and run), and breaching court orders.

The court orders are believed to be in relation to a charge involving Conway assaulting Lewis in August.

Conway, who issued an apology to the victim's family through reporters, was denied bail last month.

Seriously? How long does it take to assign a file? My money is on this being a direct result of the cutbacks last March.
