One of the best Christmas memories ever for Cassaundra Hynes of Codroy Valley was when mummers “come-a-knocking” at the door when she was visiting family in Burnt Islands during the season.

BURNT ISLANDS —  For a five-year-old Cassaundra Hynes at the time, mummers “come-a-knocking” at the door and into the home of her relatives in Burnt Islands was the most amazing thing.

The young woman, who is currently a baking student at College of the North Atlantic in Stephenville, said she remembers playing with her cousin in the house and hearing that knocking and a bunch of neighbours coming in — all dressed up in different outfits.

“The house became so loud and so lively, it was amazing and its one Christmas I’ll remember forever, especially since it was the first time I had seen mummering,” she said.

Hynes was one of several baking and cooking students at the Bay St. George Campus of College of the North Atlantic that recently prepared a Christmas dinner for hundreds of people in the community. She said for her, Christmas was always about sharing.

“In our house, it’s not about the gifts, but about family and friends and that’s what makes Christmas special ... just coming together and having fun,” she said.

While Hynes said she doesn’t know much about other families celebrate Christmas, for her family it’s all about having lots of laughs and lots of fun.

Reflecting back to her first mummers memory, she believes it was on Tibb’s Eve and said it was an awful lot of fun for a young kid. She said the tradition of mummering still continues in Burnt Islands.

Hynes is hoping to be home in Codroy Valley for Christmas this year, but to also make a visit with her relatives in Burnt Islands and maybe even see some mummers drop by while she’s there.
