CORNER BROOK  Israel Hann says now is the time for the public to get involved and speak out about the plans for the new regional hospital in Corner Brook.

“It’s time for apathy to go out the door,” said Hann, a local seniors and health-care advocate. “Get out and get involved. Once it’s done it’s too late to speak.”

To give people an opportunity to speak out about plans for the new hospital, which many say will result in a downsizing of services currently available in the city, Hann is holding a public meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Greenwood Inn and Suites.

It will be the third meeting he and fellow concerned citizens have organized.

Right now, Hann said the biggest concern he has over plans for the new facility are that it won’t include a cancer unit.

“Everybody that comes down with cancer got to go to St. John’s and if you’re in there any length of time it’s thousands of dollars. So the people on the west coast can’t afford to be treated like that any longer.”
