DEER LAKE The RCMP handed out two speeding tickets early Tuesday morning after a night of freezing rain caused icy highway conditions.

It’s leaving officers wondering what drivers are thinking when they’re behind the wheel.

“People need to slow down out there,” said Sgt. Terry Foster. “We’re seeing very slippery conditions on the highway and it’s dangerous.”

He said the Trans-Canada Highway also has several areas that are flooded, meaning the chances of hydroplaning only get better as the day goes on.

Highway warnings for various areas in the region came in most of Tuesday morning. Foster said there are also sections of the highway with a lot of water buildup that drivers need to be aware of.

Another warning was issued stating that the road from the Trans-Canada to Baie Verte was extremely slippery, making it difficult to traverse for drivers.

With temperatures dropping later Tuesday and overnight, drivers need to take extra care because the excess water will most likely freeze.

Foster said anyone who does not need to drive in these conditions should stay home.
