A power outage late Monday afternoon briefly impacted homes right across the island, according to Newfoundland Power’s website.

The estimated time for restoration was initially 7 p.m. and the issue cited by the electric utility company was “underfrequency load shedding,” By 5:15 p.m., Newfoundland Power was no longer reporting any outages.

A Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro document published earlier this month describes underfrequency load shedding as an automatic response to the sudden loss of large generating units. The load shedding aims to make generation output equal to customer demand for energy.

Hydro said in the document that such outages typically last 30 minutes or less.

Earlier this month, a massive power outage left over 190,000 Newfoundland Power customers without electricity for several hours. Some were left without power for more than a day.
