Clarence Cantwell, 22, of Corner Brook is considering running for the leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party.

It’s been said many times that a person ought to put their money where their mouth is. Well, that is just what Clarence Cantwell is prepared to do.

The 22-year-old Corner Brook man believes no man should go uncontested in a leadership race. So, if no one is willing to step up to run against Bill Barry — especially considering the approach he has taken thus far, said Cantwell — or, if no one enters the race he considers worthy of being the next Conservative leader and potential premier, then, he will.

“If I see another candidate that I thought would do as good a job or better than myself ... ” he said. “As of now, I don’t see that.”

Since Cantwell spoke to The Western Star, Corner Brook businessman Frank Coleman has said he is considering entering the race.

Other than opposing the privatizing of Nalcor, Cantwell said he would like to see more affordable housing and an increased minimum wage.

Working two full-time jobs in Corner Brook — one as an overnight manager for Ultramar Canada and the other in business — Cantwell considers himself a hardworking man.

He said he would be a representative of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“I am out there to actually do something for the people,” Cantwell said. “I care about the people — the common person, like myself.”
