Local leaders from western Newfoundland and Labrador are in Deer Lake starting today to discuss economic sustainability and regional stewardship.

The western regional meeting is the fourth in a series of six taking place this winter throughout the province. In partnership with the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador will facilitate a structured fiscal framework consultation designed to collect data on municipal revenue and service delivery. Consultations will focus around municipal expenditure pressures, existing own source revenue and efficiencies in service delivery.  Members are asked to provide feedback on options for new revenue sources.

Prior to the regional meeting members of the Urban Municipal Committee (UMC) will meet to further their work on a collaborative approach to economic development.  They will also discuss MNL's new municipal benchmarking initiative, an MMSB waste audit (a tool used to provide baseline data to help establish reduction recommendations and reduce disposal costs) as well as provincial legislation regarding a designated youth seat on councils.
