Residents present petition against parking lot

Residents of Charles Street are not happy about a parking lot that was erected there to help offset parking problems at the city depot.

The lot, which is only used by a small number of city employees while they are working, is located between two houses on the street. It was created about two years ago, supposedly temporarily, but has remained there since.

Brian Tucker addressed the concerns of his fellow residents during Monday evening’s public meeting of council. A petition was presented to council objecting to the lot and how the depot has taken over the street.

The petition states residents were not notified prior to the lot being put there — thus had not given consent to it.

Tucker outlined a number of concerns with the lot including depreciating property values, increased noise levels and activity like snowclearing, and the cost of constructing and maintaining the lot to taxpayers. They are also concerned about other activities — suggesting there are illegal things happening there.

Meanwhile, Corner Brook Mayor Charles Pender said there were problems with existing parking and safety concerns with respect to spaces available near the depot. He said the workers themselves are not happy about the lot being located away from the depot and have concerns about the safety of their vehicles and personal property.

Council has asked staff to review the situation.

“It is hard to do anything about this situation right now, at this time of year,” he said. “We also have plans to build a new municipal depot, which would resolve the concerns.”

Pender said it is important to hear the concerns of residents in the interim and as they move forward with the new project.
