Jerry George, left, Trudy Campbell and Neil Robbins, Corner Brook Arts Centre Association board members, discuss the plans for the centre following the provincial government funding announcement Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014.

The entire amount of funding is now “officially” in place for the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre.

The federal government funding totalling $450,000 — $360,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and $90,000 through Canadian Heritage — was announced Monday. It was agreed upon for quite some time, according to David Smallwood, chair of the Corner Brook Arts Centre Association, but became official with the announcement.

The province, as previously announced, is contributing $360,000, while the association raised the remaining 10 per cent.

The new multi-disciplinary arts centre to help support the region’s growing cultural tourism industry is located in the lower part of City Hall. It will house a performing arts theatre, artist studios, a visual arts gallery and exhibition space, a classroom for training and workshops, and a small retail space for art work.

“Our Government, through ACOA, is pleased to support the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre, which will help strengthen and grow the experiential and cultural tourism industry in this region,” stated Rob Moore, regional minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State, in a press release.

“Our investment will contribute to the diversification and competitiveness of Newfoundland’s west coast, while creating jobs and economic growth in local communities.”

It completes the four years of work by the dedicated volunteers.

“The Rotary Arts Centre will bring significant new business development to the city’s downtown core and will provide our growing arts communities with new facilities in which to create and sell their art,” Smallwood stated in the press release.
