?A RCMP cruiser is seen outside a residence in Felix Cove as a police officer stands guard at a house in which a man was found dead early Saturday, March 29, 2014.

The death of a man in a home in Felix Cove during the weekend was a real shock to Hilary Sheppard, a neighbour who lives across the street from where the incident occurred.

“It’s a surprise for the whole cove and disturbing when something like this goes on,” he said.

According to a news release issued Saturday night, the Bay St. George RCMP were called to a home in Felix Cove on the Port au Port Peninsula early that same morning to investigate a disturbance. Upon arrival, police found the man dead inside the home.

No information was released about how he died, but police indicated that a woman is in custody and that the woman will appear in provincial court in Stephenville today. Police don’t believe anyone else is involved in the incident and said more information would likely be released after her court appearance.

Sheppard said he didn’t hear anything and believed whatever took place happened inside the house in the wee hours of the morning. He said he first became aware something had occurred between 5 and 5:30 a.m. when police and later an ambulance arrived on scene.

“They (police) took control of the situation and the body wasn’t removed until 9 to 9:30 a.m.,” he said.

RCMP's Forensic Identification Unit and Major Crime Unit are investigating the death, alongside other officers from the Bay St. George detachment.

Marie Stagg, a resident of the community who lives a short distance past the house where the incident took place, said she was devastated and like Sheppard, was totally in shock when she first heard the news.

“Felix Cove is a quiet, friendly neighbourly community where everyone knows each other,” she said. “When I heard I knew it had to be at a house where there was someone I know and the man who owns the house is a really good person. It’s too bad this took place there.”

Felix Cove is a small community with just under 100 residents and falls within the municipal boundary of the Town of Port au Port West-Aguathuna-Felix Cove.

RCMP advised it has no concerns about public safety in relation to the incident.
