Lowlands Opal bulk carrier in St. George's Bay ice

A bulk carrier that was stuck in thick ice in St. George’s Bay off the Port au Port Peninsula on Monday was able to be guided to more open water.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said the Lowlands Opal had been drifting toward Stephenville on Monday, with a crew of 23 on board. A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched by the centre and monitored the 190-metre Belgian carrier.

Two icebreakers with the Canadian Coast Guard later arrived and guided the vessel outside the bay and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where it continued on its way.
