Ryan Robert Allan St. Pierre, 23, and Gary Jacob Watcheson, 25, appear in provincial court in Corner Brook Wednesday, April 2, 2014 for a bail hearing.

The Corner Brook Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it has not yet made connections to an alleged extortion attempt in the city to organized crime or gang-related activity.

However, Const. Scott Mosher said the police agency is aware there is such activity happening on the west coast, and is working with its partners and increasing enforcement efforts in relation to it.

Ryan Robert Allan St. Pierre, 23, and Gary Jacob Watcheson, 25 — both resident of Ontario — were arrested in the area of O’Connell Drive Friday evening. They were charged with extortion, and it is reported it was linked to threatening a targetted Corner Brook resident for about $300,000.

There was a bail hearing today in provincial court in Corner Brook for the two accused. Robbie Ash is representing both. A decision on the hearing has been scheduled for Thursday.

Meanwhile, the RNC is still actively investigating the incident. Mosher said the investigation goes beyond the two arrested in Corner Brook, encompassing many different individuals and more leads.

The officer said police worked with the alleged victim to ensure his safety following the complaint. While not directly involved in helping him in that protection — in terms of witness protection or anything similar — he said police assisted with direction and options.
