The Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander is conducting ice breaking operations in the Lark Harbour, York Harbour and Frenchman’s Cove area Sunday evening, which will leave open water tracks in the fast ice in the area.
The Coast Guard is notifying residents of the area that travelling by snowmobile or four-wheel vehicle may be dangerous.
“CCG informs the local communities of the inherent risks of icebreaking activities. CCG cannot have absolute control on the behavior of the ice," the Coast Guard said in a prepared release.
"Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working. This can cause risks for the safety of people and property. The public is warned to act accordingly, i.e. refrain from walking on the ice; remove mobile equipment in advance of icebreaking activities; protect permanently non moveable property, for instance”.
