John Scott attempts to hide his face from the media during an appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on Monday, April 7, 2014.

A Rocky Harbour man, charged with sex offences involving a girl under the age of 16, had his matters set over to Thursday following an appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on Monday.

John Frederick Scott, 42, is facing a total of 31 charges. The sex offences date back to between June 15, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2013. All involve the same alleged victim, a girl under the age of 16 at the time, and are said to have occurred in Rocky Harbour and Cormack.

Among the charges are seven counts of sexual interference, seven counts of invitation to sexual touching, seven counts of unlawfully luring a child under the age of 16 by means of a computer system, seven counts of sexual assault, a single count of accessing child pornography and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The probation order is one that had been put in place May 21, 2013.

Scott has been in custody since his arrest last Thursday and consented to continued remand until his next appearance.

Legal-aid lawyer Sandi MacKinnon appeared as duty counsel on Scott’s behalf Monday. She indicated to the court that she intends to discuss the matters with her client and the Crown prior to Scott’s next appearance. She hopes those discussions will determine how the matter will proceed.

Meanwhile, the charges come less than two months after Scott was sentenced to 60 days for supplying liquor to a minor and breaching his May 21, 2013 probation order. That incident occurred on May 23, 2013 in Rocky Harbour.

Scott’s prior criminal record also includes four previous convictions, including two for breaching court orders.
