A College of the North Atlantic student has received an Atlantic Journalism Award.

Rudey Downey, a student at the college’s Stephenville campus, was named the recipient of the Nalcor Energy Achievement Award.

Students who receive the sponsored awards were selected by their faculty for outstanding journalism work during their studies. As the winner of this award, Downey will receive a $500 prize, a framed certificate of achievement and an invitation to the Atlantic Journalism Awards gala dinner and awards event in Halifax, N.S., on May 10.

Other award recipients, announced by the organization Wednesday in a prepared release, included Jessica Howard of the University of King’s College in Halifax who received the Atlantic Lottery Achievement Award and University of Moncton student Anthony Doiron, who will receive a BellAliant journalism excellence award.

Prior to the awards gala, the Atlantic Journalism Awards will host a nominees’ reception in each province for awards finalists in that area.

The Newfoundland and Labrador reception will be held April 24 at Government House in St. John’s.
