New Stephenville courthouse announcement

Acting Premier Tom Marshall had good news for Bay St. George area residents on Monday morning when he announced a new courthouse is going to be built in the town.

He told the crowded Courtroom 2 audience, which consisted of people that work within the justice system, representatives of community in the area and other community minded citizens, that the process towards a new courthouse building will be starting soon.

While he didn’t know the timeframe or the cost for the new facility, he said a new courthouse for Stephenville has been on the radar for a long time and past time that it was done due to an increasing caseload in the area.

Premier Marshall said this will involve a four-stage program that starts off with planning, then a functional program, followed by design, then the tender and the construction of the facility.

While the timeline is not exactly known, he said it didn’t think it would take five years or more.

“This is not a hospital they’re designing,” he said.

The current courthouse building was an apartment building on the former Ernest Harmon Air Force Base before the Americans pulled out back at the end of 1966. It houses two courtrooms, other justice offices, along with motor registration and Government Services offices.

Ha Ha , political bait to get elected. No timelines known, no cost projections. All right folks think about the hospital announcement made years ago by Mr. Marshall and no concrete on the ground yet.... Good luck folks you are dealing with the devil here. Mr. Marshall we can see you coming a mile away.... Thats why I will not vote Conservative in the next general election... All these promises and no reasonable expectation for build/completion date.

Looks like the college headquarters promised by the Tories in the blue book is not coming. Guess the promise of a new court house will be the same. Empty promises for both. Votes are getting cheaper all the time. Promises don't cost a thing.

Big friggin deal! A new courthouse, "due to an increasing caseload in the area". I have never seen the inside of the current courthouse so I could care less. I do care more that caseloads are increasing. What can the Premier do about that? I guess he and Minister Shea are hoping that throwing the proverbial crumb will satisfy us simple folk in Stephenville?
