Tom O'Brien

Mayor Tom O’Brien had high praise for airport manager Brenda Martin and the board of directors of the Stephenville Airport Corporation on its partnership with Porter Airlines in introducing a seasonal flight service to Halifax, N.S.

On Wednesday, the airport corporation, along with Porter Airlines announced the summer service will see a flight arriving from Halifax at Stephenville on Saturday evenings and departing for Halifax on Sunday mornings.

O’Brien said with economic activity picking up in the town, such as Emera setting up for work on the transmission link, to Pennecon Energy carrying out steel fabrication work for the offshore from Port Harmon, the announcement came at a good time. He said having connections in the main stream of the aviation world is another big advantage. O’Brien also said it’s encouraging that Robert Deluce, the president and chief executive officer of Porter Airlines, said the company would be assessing the service on an ongoing basis with a view of possibly extending it.

Coun. Laura Aylward said a fair number of people travel to Halifax for medical reasons and it will also be good for people who travel back and forth to mainland locations for work.  She hopes the public will avail of the service, so that it continues and possibly even expands.

Organizations: Porter Airlines, Stephenville Airport

Geographic location: Halifax, Stephenville, Port Harmon

Great job! I am so happy for the Town of Stephenville. There is no reason that we can't have two viable airports here on the West Coast. I will gladly support this service.

What a biased, article; and Tom O'Brian should be ashamed of himself for making comments, that I'm sure he knows are untrue. For it's been obvious to hundreds who joined the social media page, to bring Porter to Stephenville that this had nothing to do with the Airport manger; nor anyone affiliated with the Stephenville Airport for that matter; this was, along with those who assisted him, practically the sole effort of Mr. Tony Young. He instigated the interest; and further more HE sat in endless meetings with Porter to make this happen, not the Airport manager. Furthermore, this effort was put forth because so many people hate the horrible ride along a forested highway to Deer Lake, especially when they live close to Stephenville Airport. I can only imagine what management at Porter must think reading such an article that is blatantly, disrespectful to those who actually put in the effort to make this happen! Give praise where praise is due.

Colleen, about 1/3 of the population of the west coast lives south of Corner Brook. That's about 30,000 people. For all of them, going to Deer Lake is an out of the way trip that takes them directly PAST Stephenville Airport. For People in Corner Brook, Stephenville is only 5-10 minutes further, the myth that Stephenville is so much further is just that, a myth. A good portion of the highway between Corner Brook and Stephenville is fenced to protect against moose and a realignment is in the works for Route 460 that will go straight to the airport across Carolina Avenue. I hope Porter succeeds in Stephenville and replaces the services that we lost in the past, which should never have been lost in the first place.

Trevor, not sure where you got that number, but the catchment with Corner Brook south included for the YJT is 100,000. The driving time difference from CB to each airport is 5 minutes. I timed it.

Not many will use it and they'll soon pull out because it's a waste of money ... Deer Lake is the main airport hub not sville .. No one in there right mind will travel OUT if there way when's theirs a airport 2 mins off the highway at Deer Lake ...

Great job everyone. This has been over five years in the making. A true testament that hard work and determination pays off. Now lets hope that everyone uses it and the service gets expanded. The market is definitely here!!!
