Mayor Tom O’Brien had high praise for airport manager Brenda Martin and the board of directors of the Stephenville Airport Corporation on its partnership with Porter Airlines in introducing a seasonal flight service to Halifax, N.S.
On Wednesday, the airport corporation, along with Porter Airlines announced the summer service will see a flight arriving from Halifax at Stephenville on Saturday evenings and departing for Halifax on Sunday mornings.
O’Brien said with economic activity picking up in the town, such as Emera setting up for work on the transmission link, to Pennecon Energy carrying out steel fabrication work for the offshore from Port Harmon, the announcement came at a good time. He said having connections in the main stream of the aviation world is another big advantage. O’Brien also said it’s encouraging that Robert Deluce, the president and chief executive officer of Porter Airlines, said the company would be assessing the service on an ongoing basis with a view of possibly extending it.
Coun. Laura Aylward said a fair number of people travel to Halifax for medical reasons and it will also be good for people who travel back and forth to mainland locations for work. She hopes the public will avail of the service, so that it continues and possibly even expands.
