This apartment complex on Old Bonne Bay Road in Deer Lake is set to open in early May 2014.

Owen Crossan is doing his best to help alleviate a housing crunch in Deer Lake.

Crossan is the president of NuDawn, a division of Regency Management Ltd., a company which has already opened a 24-unit apartment building on Airport Avenue. In early May, the company will open a 36-unit complex on Old Bonne Bay Road.

The building includes a mixture of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and bachelor apartments and will also include units with enhanced accessibility for seniors and the disabled.

“Every person coming in can have full access to each floor,” Crossan said.

Deer Lake Mayor Dean Ball said the developments are much-needed in a town with complex housing needs.

“It’s not geared to one market,” Ball said. “There’s a wide variety of families, which is very positive for us as a municipality. We’ve been lacking for a long time and it was difficult for people to find housing.”

Ball said he expects more contractors and business people to look to Deer Lake for future development. And, if that is the case, council will be eager to listen to ideas and proposals, he said.

“Different families have different wish lists, so there’s still an opening for more and I think you’re going to see other business people take advantage of it,” he said.

Crossan said half the units have already been rented, in several cases sight-unseen. He said the new accommodations are a comfortable option for many seniors in the area.

“They will be living in a complex where they aren’t exposed to the weather all the time,” he said. “They won’t be as isolated in the winter, at least they can walk across the corridor to their friend and borrow a cup of sugar.”

Crossan said he hopes to persuade Canada Post to place a mailbox inside the complex so seniors and those with limited mobility won’t have to brave the elements to go to the local post office.

A series of open house events are expected for the new complex in May.
