A 23-year-old Corner Brook man is facing a number charges under the Highway Traffic Act and has criminal charges pending following a traffic stop in the city on Sunday.
At about 9:10 p.m. officers were conducting a general patrol of Caribou Road and conducted a licence plate expiry check on a vehicle driving ahead of the police unit.
The inquiry revealed that the licence plate was expired, despite the fact that it was displaying a valid registration sticker for 2015.
Police stopped the vehicle and as a result of the investigation the driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving without a driver’s licence, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating a vehicle without a valid insurance policy in effect, failure to notify transfer of ownership and displaying stickers other than issued.
The vehicle was seized by police and impounded.
Further checks into the registration sticker attached to the licence plate identified it as being stolen from a licence plate belonging to a parked vehicle located in another area of the city. As a result, a criminal investigation for possession of property obtained by crime has been initiated and criminal charges against the driver are anticipated.
