City recruiting outside workers

The City of Corner Brook is recruiting new employees for its labour pool of outside workers in the public works and water and sewer divisions.

At Monday’s public meeting of city council, it was indicated workers will be needed to replace employees who have either retired or resigned in the last two or three years.

The number of new employees will be determined by an evaluation of the interested candidates and the current demands of the two divisions that will be hired for. While the intent is to bolster the labour pool, preference will be given to candidates having specific skills or qualifications that would allow them to fill roles such as heavy equipment operator, pipe layer, carpenter and so on.

Sounds of Summer to include lunch hour performances

Corner Brook is making an addition to its Sounds of Summer concert series this year with a weekly lunch hour music series.

The events will be held in the civic square outside city hall each Friday from noon until 1:30 p.m. for a nine-week period, beginning July 4.

The city has a full lineup of entertainment for the series. Financial assistance from the Downtown Business Association, Corner Brook Museum and Archives, Western DMO and the Rotary Arts Committee has covered the funding for all the performances, except for the final two so far.

There will be a barbecue organized by the Community Youth Network and the City of Corner Brook’s Business Services division will co-ordinate the live entertainment with the assistance of the Downtown Events planning committee.
