After some uncertainty Deer Lake will have a Relay For Life this year, but the question of whether it continues beyond that is still up in the air.

“The possibility is there that this could be the last one for Deer Lake,” said Tarragh Shanahan, community resource co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society — Newfoundland and Labrador Division in Corner Brook.

Following a meeting last Wednesday in Deer Lake, Shanahan said it was a relief the event would go ahead on September 6.

Shanahan said about 10 people have signed on to form the organizing committee. Other than one person returning from last year, the group is new. The committee will be assisted by a summer student the society plans to hire.

“But we are hitting the ground running and we’ve got some major challenges ahead of us,” said Shanahan.

“It’s very important for them to keep it in Deer Lake,” she said. “So now, that we’ve got the committee started, we need the community behind us. We need the volunteer base. We need the people to start registering teams. “It’s all going to start now,” she said.

Shanahan said the relay is an important fundraiser for the Cancer Society with the majority of the money raised in the province staying in the province.

She said a portion goes outside for research, but most goes to providing things like wigs, turbans, breast prostheses and other support services, which are free to cancer patients

Some money also goes to the running of Daffodil Place, which offers low cost accommodations to patients who have to stay in St. John’s.

“Without the events like Relay For Life we cannot get the money to keep these support services going,” said Shanahan.

The 12-hour relay will take place from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on September 6 at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.

Shanahan noted it’s the 10th anniversary for the Relay For Life in Deer Lake and the theme is Daffodils and Diamonds. Besides it being the flower of the Cancer Society the daffodil is also the 10th anniversary flower. And diamonds are the 10th anniversary gemstone.
