For years as a child, Shell LeDrew looked up to her talented older sister Nicole LeDrew May and the art she was able to create.

Whether it was their early years with crayons, moving into drawing and later with painting, the young sibling always thought her sister was so much better than her.

Years later — as they watch over their own children’s dabbles in art — Nicole marvels at Shell’s photography. It is not just the ability to take a great picture, but the vision she has in creating an art.

Together they have produced “Surrounded by Beauty,” an exhibit being showcased at the JL Gallery in Corner Brook. Nicole’s painting and Shell’s photography is being displayed for two weeks.

It is the first “solo” exhibit for each of the artists, and they are grateful to have each other as they delve into this long-awaited world.

“We have been talking about wanting to do something for such a longtime,” LeDrew May said. “We have a similar interest in visual art. We both have young children, so we understand how difficult it has been to find the time to do it.

“Our lives have been quite paralleled for a longtime, so it is nice to be able to bring it together and do this work together, and support each other.”

LeDrew’s photography is a creative glimpse into her perspective on the world — discovering the beauty around her and showcasing it in a special way that it would normally not be seen.

A part of her collection involves freezing flowers in ice and using light to create a unique art piece. Ironically, it was an idea that came from her son Sam, who wanted to freeze his Legos in ice as an art project. The inspiration was created.

“Any part of our day, no matter how hectic that day might be, is surrounded by beauty,” LeDrew said.

It was a nervous time before the exhibition opening for the sisters, but something they were both excited about as well. There was a sense of belonging about the whole ordeal.

“It’s a chance for us to pursue what we always thought we were — artistic,” LeDrew said.

It certainly appears to be a beginning for them. They have another exhibit scheduled even before this one ends. They will be showcasing more of their work at Urve Manuel’s Glass Studio in Rocky Harbour starting June 28.

The last JL Gallery exhibition until fall is “Surrounded By Beauty” showcasing sisters Nicole and Shell LeDrew.

The show opening is today from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery located on Broadway, and the show itself runs runs until June 30.

“Surrounded by Beauty is a show about finding the beauty in everyday objects and moments," according to the artists' statement. "Whether it be the colours revealed from sunlight falling on scattered marbles or the painterly qualities of a flower that we had not noticed until now."

The LeDrew sisters invites their viewers to slow down and be mindful of the beauty already there.
