Dale Porter, a man in his early 40s and the father of two young children, suffered serious injuries and was found outside his home at about 4 a.m. He later died.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the entire region, and left many area residents on edge as police work to solve the high profile case.

Various media outlets, including TC Media, were reporting Thursday that the RCMP had arrested a man, and that charges were imminent.

However, the man was released late in the day on Thursday without being charged. The Compass knows the man’s identity, but has decided not to disclose it publicly.

Staff Sgt. Boyd Merrill said the information about a suspect did not come from officials within the RCMP.

News that the man being questioned was released was greeted with anger and frustration by residents, with many voicing their displeasure on social media.

Meanwhile, Merrill confirmed dozens of interviews have been conducted to date, and officers have used the information to help advance the investigation.

He continued to emphasis that there is no threat to public safety.

From the case where the women killed the man on the Northern Penn. with an axe and the charges were dropped because of illegal searches to arrests in Clarkes Beach for Child Pornography dismissed because no evidence...........and you folks out there think the RCMP can handle such a serious case. The lists go on and on with bungled cases. Maybe we need the RNC on this entire Island - no more expensive as we pay the for the RCMP anyway. One thing for sure the RNC are at least friendly and responsive to the people. This is just a posting for the RCMP - no ownership. The RNC are permanent residents that have a personal relationship. I have a bridge for sale in PEI.

Everything is so hush hush on this situation, you would think the police would hold a conference and let te public know where the investigation stands.

As a father of two, it concerns me that nothing is being disclosed by the police. Someone is dead and there have been no arrest. That scares me a little to say the least. I think the police should be a little more forth coming.

How can you say there is no threat to public safety when a murder has been committed and they have no suspects? Incredible!!!

i couldnt agree more. there is something out on the loose that has killed an individual, who is to say that this does not happen again? how do they have one suspect in custody but then released with no charges laid. the fact that the police department is saying nothing at all leaves me in shock and quite upset.

If the police knew nothing then they would most likely appeal to the public and release more info. Usually when you know nothing about what's going on its because they don't want to jepordize the investigation. They know enough to know the public is not in danger and keep saying that over and over again. It's gossip and media like NTV that creates the fear by reporting about drugs and biker gangs yet no info has been released by the cops. So calm down and trust that the police WILL figure this out, because they will.
