A resident of Forestside Street alerted the Corner Brook Fire Department after spotting smoke coming from the eaves of a neighbour’s home on Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Neville Wheaton said the call for assistance was received at the department at about 2:41 p.m Tuesday.

“Upon our arrival there was smoke coming from both gable ends of the house,” said Wheaton of the situation at 17 Forestside St.

“Once we got entrance to the building we discovered that the fire was contained above the ceiling.”

Wheaton said suppression crews went in and knocked the fire down and checked for hot spots and extension of the fire.

“We always check for extension to make sure we got it the first time around,” said Wheaton.

Very little damage could be seen from the outside of the home, except for some siding that had come off and been cut when firefighters cut holes in the plywood to open up the gable areas of the home.

Wheaton said there was some fire damage above the ceiling and some smoke damage in the main part of the home.

The home was unoccupied at the time the fire was reported, however, the home owners were on site while the firefighters worked to put out the fire. One of them declined to comment on the incident.

Firefighters were still on the scene at 4:15 p.m. and Wheaton said once they were finished the scene would be turned over to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for investigation.
