Michael Tavenor silenced the St. John's Capitals' bats, but it just wasn't enough to hold off a late comback in Game 1 of the senior A provincial baseball final.

At St. Pat's Ball Park in St. John's earlier this afternoon, the Corner Brook Barons Ace shut out the Caps for five innings. In the top of the 6th, Travis Taylor — playing third base for the defending champions — appeared to give the visitors plenty of cushion to close out Game 1 of the seven-game series. Catcher Steve Hynes, last year's most valuable player, had put the Barons ahead 1-0 in the blink of an eye in the top of the first against Pasadena native, former Baron and now Caps hurler Scott Goosney.

A double play throw that got away from first baseman Jeff Gillam plated the Caps first run in the bottom of the 6th. The Caps loaded the bases with nobody out on a sharp single to centre, a walk, and a bunt single. The Caps scraped across the tying runs, which included the first real hard hit ball off Tavenor into the rightfield corner.

A sharp sacrafice fly ball to rightfield with one out and the winning run at third was enough to get the Caps the win. The Barons thought they had gotten out of trouble when Warford caught the ball and his throw was cutoff and thrown to first to get the runner sscambling back to the bag.

They protested the umpires' ruling that the run still counted, a call which appears was rightfully upheld.

Another Pasadena native Greg Barry picked up the win, pitching a scoreless seventh in relief. Tavenor gave up the fours runs off seven hits, three walks and had two strikeouts. Goosney went six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and one hit batter, and he struck out seven.

Game 2 is at 7 p.m.
