Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is still trying to determine what caused a trip at a terminal station that knocked out power for all of the Northern Peninsula north of Daniel’s Harbour Tuesday.
The power outage at the Peter Barrens terminal station near Daniel’s Harbour happened around mid-afternoon. It affected the systems serving St. Anthony, Roddickton, Main Brook, Hawke’s Bay, Plum Point, Bear Cove and the surrounding communities.
According to the utility, some 3,500 customers were affected by the unexpected loss of electrical services.
Erin Squires, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s media contact, said a backup diesel system managed to restore power to most customers within an hour after the outage. However, it was not until around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night that the last of around 1,200 customers had their electricity back up and running.
Squires said the work crews managed to bypass the malfunction and were still busy Wednesday trying to figure out the exact cause of the trip.
