A Corner Brook man caught allegedly shoplifting twice in the same day was released on an undertaking after making an appearance in provincial court Thursday afternoon.

At 11:05 a.m. Wednesday morning, Nelson Butt was arrested by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for allegedly stealing items at Dominion in the Murphy Square area. He was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and released at the time to appear in court at a later date.

A little more than four hours later, at 3:40 p.m., Butt was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 for allegedly shoplifting from the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation outlet in the Corner Brook Plaza.

This time, Butt was detained pending a court appearance.

The 52-year-old made that appearance before Judge Kymil Howe Thursday afternoon. Crown attorney Lori St. Croix was agreeable to releasing Butt from custody under certain conditions, including that he stay away from the grocery and liquor stores he’s accused of stealing from.

Butt’s next appearance in provincial court has been set for Oct. 7.

This is tooo funny...obviously he is desperate. He's certainly not used to shoplifting, or good at it. Maybe they should find out what his real problem is...

Getting a kick start on his Christmas shopping. On a serious note, more needs to be done with shoplifting because in the end, the good guy consumer is the one paying.
