CORNER BROOK — Trevor Taylor is getting back into politics.

After a day filled with rumours and speculation that Taylor would be running for the federal Conservative party in the riding of Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, the former provincial minister announced his intention to seek the seat to the The Western Star late Wednesday evening.

“After careful consideration and discussion with my family, I believe that now is the right time to enter a new season of public service,” said Taylor. “I want to be part of a government that sees the bigger picture and translates it to results for real people on the ground.”

The recent federal budget contained measures to increase the number of doctors in rural communities, gave a tax break to volunteer firefighters, and increased the guaranteed income of seniors — all of which were opposed by Liberal MPs like Gerry Byrne, said a release issued by Taylor.

Taylor served in the provincial cabinet as minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, and Transportation and Works.

“I believe my experience leading these departments gives me unique insight into the challenges that face rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Our riding needs a stronger voice in Ottawa, from a Member of Parliament who is willing to work hard to represent the needs of our communities. I am ready and willing to be that person.”

This is not Taylor’s first run at the seat held by incumbent Byrne.

In 2000 he went up against Byrne as a New Democrat. Byrne took the win with 15,446 votes to Taylor’s 8,173 — which was a record for the NDP in the riding.

In 2003, he entered provincial politics as a Progressive Conservative in the Straits-White Bay North. In September 2009, Taylor announced he resignation as the minister of Transportation and Works. Just over a week later he announced his resignation as MHA.

Gerry had a long and distinguished political career that will now come to an end. These last several years he has been ineffective and contributed little to the district. He will be fondly remembered and probably elected provincially for an additional pension. Trevor will get a second chance to contribute to the area but when he becomes as complacent as Byrne he to will be sent packing with pensions in tow. The game, three shells, two nuts. The odds are stacked!

This was Trevor Taylor in September 2009 which prompts one to ask why now,Trev, why now in May 2011? H eleft behind a distraught Flowers Cove but stil praised the Williams government which caused the menatal anguish .So about eighteen months later you're back ready to back Danny's and NL's federal enemy .Good God man, retreive your integrity you had before your foray into politics and become again the decent non-political person we assume you once were . Telegram quote fron sept, 2009 The provincial government announced at the end of August that people in Flower's Cove, a small community in Taylor's district, would soon lose X-ray and lab services, as those medical services were being relocated to St. Anthony, a larger town about 100 kilometres away. "I want to stress that this is a very personal decision. It has nothing to do with anything that has or is going on in government. You know, it's not a question of my support for the premier or the government," Taylor said. "The time has come where I just want to get my personal life back in order." Taylor said he is not interested in running federally, but instead has accepted a position with a non-profit organization that will focus on Arctic ecosystem management. He has resigned as a cabinet minister immediately, but won't official step down until next week.

Byrne is a good for nothing MP who has done nothing except talk talk talk for years with no action. The only thing he does is criticize Marine Atlantic and the Conservative Party about the Gulf Ferry Service. Time for him to go... the only time we hear from him about real issues is immediately prior to an election when he wants our votes. Taylor is an opportunist. He ran for the Fed NDP, Provinicial Libs and now the Fed Cons party. What a joke, clearly, he is in this for himself and doesn't even know where his own political beliefs rest. Is he right wing? left wing? or center? Can we even trust a guy who doesn't know his own political positioning? I hear the NDP are going to run a great candidate in this election, not sure why it hasn't been public, but word on the street is that it will be Corner Brook Lawyer, Shelley Senior.. if she does run, she would be awesome - fresh ideas, well known and well respected in Corner Brook. The NDP on the west coast are really ramping up and getting on the go with great candidates like Tony Adey (Provincial) and Shelly Senior... I hope they make progress.. we need some young educated new folk to politics. Byrne needs to go, Taylor needs to climb back under his rock and we need to elect a new face to our riding. PS. DO NOT VOTE FOR A HARPER CONSERVATIVE, THEY CAN"T BE TRUSTED!

As bob said about the way Trevor is spreading his manure,If he (trevor ) is elected in this riding it will be a sad day for this district. One other thing,Gerry has done wonders for all NL"s and Canadians in general.

OMG...talk about manure. Tell me what Gerry Byrne has done? And for all NLers and Canadians(i had to pick myself up off the floor from laughing). The guy was part of Martins government who refused to give us our fair share of the Atlantic Accord. The only thing Byrne is any good for is getting on openline and complaining, especially any time a ferry is late!! What did Gerry do to improve Marine Atlantic when he was there? Nothing...the same as he did with all the other files.

It hasn't been that long Trevor! We all remember how you were non-existent as MHA representative for the Northern Peninsula. Be satisified with one pension instead of trying to snow the population again. This guy just isn't that smart and certainly not reliable!!

Wow Ted you certainly dont know much about the Northern Peninsula if you think Trevor was non existent!! The guy did more for that area than any other MHA!! Got elected 3 times too! Maybe you should check with your buddy Marshall Dean to see who is not that smart and certainly not reliable! Only now getting out of his cacoon! Mr Taylor can certainly hold his own. I would put Trevor's record up against Gerry Byrne's anyday.

Just want this riding needs? A guy who is not able to commit to a full term in office? He will represent us until something else comes up in his personal life, and then he will quit? By the way, his statement "The recent federal budget contained measures to increase the number of doctors in rural communities, gave a tax break to volunteer firefighters, and increased the guaranteed income of seniors — all of which were opposed by Liberal MPs like Gerry Byrne, said a release issued by Taylor." Is completely wrong as they did not even vote on the budget. I hope Byrne takes it to him for these false allogations.
