A reader says he thinks it’s time Corner Brook city councillors gave serious thought to a complete rebuild of West Street.
He says it’s been hacked up and patched for decades and now is rough and ugly.
“This is one of the main streets in the city and is among the oldest and it deserves better treatment.
“Right now as the winter ends, it looks like a war zone full of holes,” he said.
A reader dropped off a note about the condition of city streets during a recent weekend.
It said that on stormy days during the winter, it’s mid-afternoon before a plow can be seen.
“Even the main roads weren’t plowed,” the note said.
A senior called last week to complain about the craters that keep appearing at the intersection in front of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.
“The road was full of water and I hit one of them and ended up having to call roadside assistance. I don’t know the cost yet but it will be expensive.
“I smashed up my bumper and flattened my tire.
The woman said they keep filling in the holes but it does little lasting good.
“No one wants to take responsibility. I phoned the Transportation people and they said there are warning signs there so they don’t take responsibility.
“I’m a senior and don’t have this kind of money. They should have cones or markers right in the holes.”
One Corner Brook driver has a warning for others — be extra careful at intersections.
“The mountains of snow that have built up this year makes it difficult to see if traffic is coming on many streets in the city.
“I was driving in the Country Road area and it’s amazing the height of the snow in that part of the city and other areas aren’t much better.
“Come on spring!” he said.
