An announcement last week by the provincial government that it's supporting a salmon smolt hatchery for Stephenville bodes well for the whole Bay St. George area.

Topics :
New Brunswick , Stephenville

While the company setting up the hatchery is based in New Brunswick, the fact it is  already established in this province with salmon farms makes it an even more attractive situation since the hatchery will be supplying those locations.

Currently the smolt supply for these fish farms has to come from outside the province, which means it has to be in a tank truck a lot longer while crossing the Gulf.

Having it transported from Stephenville to the locations of these different farms by either truck or boat will cut transportation time. There will be direct and indirect jobs as the result, which will be welcome in the area. Anytime there are new jobs and new money coming to a community, it helps.

The owner says he intends to hire local people at the hatchery because in all other sites there have been locals hired and it's working fine for his company.

He plans to train people on the job and feels filling the positions won’t be a problem.

The announcement was well received by the town and the mayor hinted there are more projects being worked on and it often takes years for them to become a reality, if they ever do.

Hopefully, more of potential projects will become a reality and eventually there will be more industry moving to the area and further improve the economy of the Bay St. George area.
