Howard Lavers drowned despite the best efforts of other officers who were in his party and saw him in trouble.
Lavers was a professional who made his living travelling in the backcountry during all seasons of the year and still he fell victim to the elements.
It should be a warning to other snowmobilers who take to the woods for recreation and fun.
You just can’t be too careful.
We’ve had a run of cold weather and still there are weak spots in the ice on bodies of water ... even as far north as the Northern Peninsula.
Snowmobilers should stick to the groomed trails and avoid water at any cost.
It’s just not worth taking a chance with yours and your family’s lives just for a fun winter day gliding through the snow.

Luckily, there have been few incidents reported this winter where snowmobilers have run into trouble, but then again, the most dangerous time of the year is about to arrive.
Spring is just a few weeks away and the days are already getting longer and warmer.
That will soon mean ice will begin to eat out from below and create deadly conditions in many places where snowmobilers travel.
Don’t get carried away with the sun, the warmth and the snow — it’s not worth putting your life at risk over.
